Marine Teleost TAG fish of the year 2026

it is the 3rd year of the Fish of the Year Campaign and this year the focus is not on a fish but rather the stage before that and it is all about EGGS.

Marine fish reproduce in many ways, some are live bearers, some lay eggs on rocks, plants or other surfaces. But did you know that 75% of all marine fish release their eggs into the open ocean?

This year the campaign focusses on two aspects:

- teach visitors about how fish spawn

- encourage aquarists to get involved in the Eggspedition and identify which fish are breeding in their aquarium

Materials can be found and downloaded here

The centrepiece of the campaign is the International Marine Fish Day, a global event dedicated to marine fish conservation and taking place for the first time on 6 August 2026. Participants wanting to take a more active role in the campaign can mark the day by organising events at their aquarium and creating educational activities that raise awareness of marine fish conservation. Ideas for activities will be proposed by the TAG at the beginning of spring to help you organise this day within your institution.
